College Fair Tips
Introduction
To be a successful Admissions Alumni Ambassador, you need to be well informed. This includes being familiar with Colorado State's philosophy of recruitment, University facts and the admissions process.
Philosophy of Recruitment
Your role as an Admissions Alumni Ambassador is to expand the outreach of the Office of Admissions to students considering Colorado State. Your objective is to provide the information they need to stimulate their interest in exploring opportunities at Colorado State University.
Policies - Everywhere
- Smile. Be positive, enthusiastic, and professional.
- Stress academic excellence at all times.
- Represent the University, not a college, department, or specific population.
- Volunteer personal information to a prospective student that is based on your experience and facts.
- Separate your opinion from facts, and be sure that what you state as fact is accurate.
- Never speak negatively about another college or university. This is unprofessional and usually inaccurate. No one can be an expert on institutions they don't represent.
- Never speak negatively about any population or geographic location. Besides being unprofessional, this has the potential of offending and hurting the feelings of people when you least expect it.
- Do not make a statement of admissibility to a prospective student. The Office of Admissions has the responsibility to make that determination only after an extensive holistic review of the student's complete application package.
- Do not make statements of eligibility for financial aid. Only Student Financial Services has that authority.
Before the Fair
- Confirm the exact location (including room: gymnasium, cafeteria, library, etc.), date and time, which the Office of Admissions sent you in advance. Ask for directions to the fair location before you get there. Plan to arrive 30 minutes before the fair is scheduled to open.
- Carefully check to see that you've received all of your materials. If they haven't arrived by UPS at least three days before the program, call Connie Pino at (970) 491-7372 or email her at connie.pino@colostate.edu. Please refer any other questions concerning college fair dates, times or instruction to Heather Bean at Heather.Bean@colostate.edu or (970) 491-1435.
- All Admissions Alumni Ambassadors will receive a training packet with the following information:
- Admission undergraduate brochures, financial aid and scholarship information
- Sample contact card
- Information on the University Honors Program, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate
- Showcase Colorado State University Visit Day information
- List of colleges, major programs of study and concentrations
- College fair tips
- Sports clubs
- In addition to these materials, on-line publications are located on the admissions website http://admissions.colostate.edu/FutureFreshmen/
- Please note: This year the paper application has been discontinued.
At the Fair:
- Be courteous to other college representatives at college fairs or high school visits.
- Stay at your table at fairs. If you must leave for a few minutes, do so when there is no one waiting to talk to you. Inform the "rep" at the table next to you that you will be right back, and ask them to relay that information to anyone who may happen to come to your table before you return. (It's fine to offer to return the favor, too.)
- Don't call students over to your table, but don't stand passively either. Greet the students at your table, invite questions and ask how you can help them.
- Encourage students to fill out cards before leaving the Colorado State table or session.
After the Fair:
- Pick up all leftover materials from your area when the fair is over.
- Be sure you have collected all completed contact cards.
- Return all completed contact cards and the evaluation form to the Office of Admissions in the envelope provided as soon as possible.
